La Bicicleta / The Bicycle

English version

The bicycle which I hope will see me from Indonesia back to Spain is a GT Avalanche, with a steel fork. I was initially looking for a bike with a steel frame, however for various reasons this has not been possible and I am keeping my fingers crossed that the GT will prove hardy enough to last the entire journey.

Both the back and front racks are made of steel, something which gives the bike two advantages; firstly steel is sturdier than aluminium and secondly it will be easier to fix if anything brakes. Another plus point is that the bag hold is lower which improves the centre of gravity; really quite essential when carrying so much weight.

The tyres, Schwalbe marathon XR 26″x2, have double belts for puncture protection as well as a reflection band- it is unlikely however that these will last the whole trip and so I’m expecting to have to buy new ones at some point.

The double level handlebar is there to improve posture and will therefore increase the overall comfort of the ride. The seat pillar that comes with the bike has suspension, something I will be thoroughly thankful for when riding over the many potholes I will no doubt encounter.

Other great components on the bike are a kickstand, a rear view mirror, a rear light and a speedometer.
